Bombs carry Cavers to tourney triumph LAKE OSWEGO � The Grants Pass boys basketball team took advantage of a doubling Sunset defense to hit on 9 of 18 from 3-point range and pick up a 71-62 win over Sunset at the Lakeside Holiday Tournament on Tuesday. The fifth-ranked Cavemen play in the championship game today at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Glencoe/Lakeridge game. The Apollos collapsed hard on Grants Pass big man Ian Elseth, leaving Andy Dobner open on the perimeter. "The were doubling down on Elseth pretty hard which opened it up for us outside," said Grants Pass coach Bill Cowell. "We shot better from 3�s than we did from 2�s." Grants Pass, which led 27-26 at the half, used a 22-14 third-quarter advantage to break things open. Ryan Berg led Grants Pass with 16 points and six boards as the Cavemen improved to 5-0 on the season. ROGUE RIVER 48, MYRTLE POINT 43 � At Rogue River, Derrick Schoner hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points to lead Rogue River to a non-conference win. The Chieftains held a 39-29 lead into the final quarter but missed some key free throws down the stretch to keep the game close. Rogue River missed all five of its attempts from the line on the night. Jason Luchterhand and Zach Badley each grabbed eight rebounds to lead Rogue River. The Crusaders upped a 31-22 halftime lead to 48-28 heading into the final stanza. Murphy also pulled down seven boards while Michael Fiddler added eight points, six assists, six rebounds and four blocked shots. St. Mary�s improved to 7-2 on the season.
