Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 20, 2006 Events herald arrival of spring Oh boy, you know spring is in full swing when the gardening events start showing up. Following are a few activities for the family to enjoy as you pick out plants, learn techniques and get ideas to take home to your own garden. This coming weekend is an exciting time for Rogue Valley gardeners. Spring is in the air, garden beds lie waiting to be filled and it's time for the Oregon State University-Jackson County Master Gardener Spring Fair. If you haven't attended this event, you're in for a happy surprise. It's taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jackson County Exposition Park in Central Point. The theme of this 27th annual fair is "Gardeners are Perennial Optimists." More than 150 commercial booths will display and sell garden-related products such as plants, ornaments, water features, outdoor furniture, wildlife habitat, lawn and garden equipment, and much more. Master Gardeners will sell plants as well, including starts shared from their own gardens. Offered will be trees, shrubs, vines and perennials. Vegetable starts and annual flowers have been grown in the Master Gardener greenhouse to meet many planting needs. Advertisement Free classes are scheduled both days of the Spring Fair, conducted by gardening experts on a variety of subjects. On Saturday morning Stan Mapolski, The Rogue Gardener, will broadcast his morning radio show KMED, 1440 AM from a sea of plants. The Plant Clinic will be open for business, with Master Gardeners answering gardening questions. Bring insect or plant samples to help with problem-solving. Free well-water testing for nitrates is being offered bring a half cup; and you can find out the pH of your soil by bringing a dry soil sample in a sandwich bag. The two-day Master Gardener Spring Fair is the largest plant event of its kind in the Rogue Valley. It is organized and operated solely by volunteers of the Master Gardener Association. Admission is $2, kids 12 and under get in for free, and parking's free too. Handicap access is available. Proceeds help fund Master Gardener community educational outreach programs. Celebrate "Earth Day 2006" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at North Mountain Park, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. More than 60 exhibits will teach how to conserve energy, reduce waste, prevent pollution, protect wildlife and create an earth-friendly lifestyle. Enjoy a birds of prey and reptile exhibit from Wildlife Images, other exhibits, crafts, Earthball games, puppet theater and live music. Snacks and beverages will be for sale; and a silent auction will be conducted to benefit the park's weather station. Staff suggest that in the spirit of Earth Day, you walk, bike or ride the free Rogue Valley Transportation District shuttle to the center. The Rogue Valley Orchid Society will begin meeting at Anna Maria Creekside, 822 Golf View Drive, Medford in the Courtyard Room. The society meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of each month.
