2 accidents put 3 in the hospital By DAMIAN MANN,Mail Tribune Jul 08, 2002 12:00 AM A A The July 4 weekend ended with a bang when two separate accidents left three people seriously injured Sunday. A two-vehicle collision on Highway 66 resulted in injuries to two women, and a male motorcyclist was airlifted from Dead Indian Memorial Road from the other accident. The Highway 66 accident occurred late Sunday morning about a half-mile from Emigrant Lake when a westbound silver Mercury Sable lost control on a curve, then veered into the oncoming lane, according to the Oregon State Police. A Volkswagen Rabbit, heading east, hit the side of the Sable, a state police official said. Both female victims, whose names were not available, were taken to Rogue Valley Memorial Center. Captain Jim Campbell of Jackson County Fire District 5 said the 57-year-old Ashland woman in the Rabbit had multiple bone and facial fractures. An 18-year-old Medford woman in the Sable was incoherent and had received possible head injuries, he said. Campbell said the fire department received assistance from personnel with the U.S. Forestry Department, the Bureau of Land Management and the Oregon Department of Forestry, all of whom happened to be training near the accident site. In a separate early afternoon accident, a motorcyclist, whose name was not available, suffered an open fracture to the knee. The 23-year-old Ashland man was airlifted to Rogue Valley Memorial Center. Campbell said the motorcycle lost control at the 12-mile marker of Dead Indian Memorial Road, leaving the highway on a straight stretch, then hit a driveway. Him and his bike separated company, and he went 36 feet through the air, he said. Emergency crews bandaged the patient, then took him to a landing area for the helicopter ride to the hospital.
