Energy companies approached both California and Washington to build before proposing the Jordan Cove pipeline through Oregon, but were denied the opportunity by people in both of those states. The people of Oregon shouldn’t be stuck with a pipeline that does absolutely nothing for the state economy or environment but feathers the financial nests of a Canadian private company and a pipeline builder headquartered in Oklahoma. We, the people of Oregon, are being taken for a ride by these corporations because they could not get any other state on the West Coast to agree to building and operating a pipeline through their states. This project does nothing to further to public good in Oregon. The pipeline would impact our forests, rivers and climate and put our communities at risk. Everyone should contact the governor and their state and federal elected officials and let them know that we feel the same way as the people of California and Washington: We don’t want the pipeline running through our state! Harry Foster Medford The time is now “The time has come, the walrus said …” Yes, the time is now to let your representatives know you support HB 3470, the Climate Stability and Justice Act. Climate change is an urgent concern; delayed action will definitely increase consequences and cost. HB 3470 would help protect human health and the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It authorizes the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission to develop a program to limit state emissions. It applies the best available science, while remaining flexible to new technology and changing circumstances. HB 3470 is in the Rules Committee. When passed it will go to the Joint Ways and Means Committee. This process needs your help. You could contact all members of these committees by phone or email. I often call at 7 a.m. and leave a brief message, “my name, my county, I support HB 3470”. Any time of day is the right time. Now is the right time. Phone numbers and email addresses are at  www.socan.info  or  www.oregonlegislature.gov . If you only have time for one, please contact your representatives. Act now; we may not have another chance for two years. Act now for your children and grandchildren. We can delay action no longer. Louise Shawkat Ashland Target all gases Global warming results from greenhouse gases emissions, the prime culprits being carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and methane. Although because of its volume, carbon dioxide is the major cause, the other two gases are also critical mainly because their global warming impact is tens to hundreds of times that of carbon dioxide. According to the EPA, between 1990 and 2013 15 percent of U.S. global warming emissions came from the latter two gases. Therefore, when we develop programs and policies to address global warming, we must target all greenhouse gases, not just carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, there are many who still focus on carbon, promoting either a tax/fee or a cap on allowable emissions. The result of this mistaken focus is troubling: EPA rules regarding power plants target carbon dioxide emissions, not greenhouse gas emissions. The result is that utilities are encouraged to switch to natural gas (which they erroneously taught as "the clean fossil fuel") even though recent research indicates that it is worse than coal because of leakage of methane. Four of six bills introduced into the Oregon Legislature this session addressed only carbon. Let’s focus on the real problem: greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate pollution.
