Daniel Mark Baker, of the 1600 block of Foots Creek Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by medics responding to the 9 p.m. crash, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. Baker was headed north on Old Stage Road near Westover Boulevard when his Ford Bronco crossed into an oncoming lane, ran off the road and into a bar ditch. The truck struck a tree and caught fire upon impact, Winters said. Baker, who was in the vehicle alone, was thrown from the Bronco. No other vehicles were involved. "We definitely know it was a high-speed accident," Winters said. "He was doing at least twice the speed limit." The speed limit along the section of Old Stage Road where the wreck occurred is 35 mph. Advertisement Crews from Jackson County Fire District 3 went to the scene and quickly extinguished flames that burned part of a tree and a small section of dry grass, Winters said. Traffic on part of Old Stage Road was shut down while police worked to reconstruct the accident. More than 30 people have died in automobile crashes in Jackson County so far in 2004, Winters said.
