Local Roundup: Dunlap HRs lift Mustangs SALEM � Travis Dunlap hit two home runs Friday to lead the Medford Mustangs to two wins Friday at the Willamette Classic American Legion baseball tournament. Dunlap led off the second-inning of the Mustangs� 5-2 win over Vancouver Red Lion with his sixth home run of the year. Charlie Jensen added another solo blast in the sixth to pad the Medford lead and send pitcher Brent Kircher to his third win in four outings. Kircher escaped a jam in the seventh when he gave up three consecutive singles to start off the inning before settling down to record the final three outs with only one run crossing the plate. In the second game, Dunlap launched a mammoth, solo shot over the right-field wall in the third inning as the Mustangs downed Longview, Wash., Locker Room, 7-4. Medford erupted for five runs in the first when Phil Ouellette reached on an error, advanced on Colby Gonzales� single and Dunlap�s RBI double. Chuck Shine, Dan Bruce and Matt Skundrick also knocked in runs during the inning. Dunlap led the Mustangs with four hits in six plate appearances in the two games, while Shine went 2-for-3 in the second contest. Gonzales and Bruce also had two hits apiece for Medford in the opening game. The Mustangs (13-8) improved to 2-1 in the tournament and play a 12:30 p.m. game with Lakeridge today. If Medford wins, it will earn a spot in Sunday�s championship. NORTH JACKSON ROYALS 14-11, MEDFORD MAVERICKS 4-6 � At Eagle Point on Thursday, North Jackson used two big innings to separate from the Mavericks in an American Legion twin bill. The Royals (9-1, 6-0 Area 4) scored seven runs in the fifth inning of Game 1 and used a five-run sixth in the nightcap to pull away from Medford. Nick Newmann picked up the win in both games in improving to 5-0, and also went 4-for-8 with four runs. Evan Pogue paced North Jackson in the opener with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. Scott Stockton and Matt Holte each added two hits and two runs for the Royals. Mark Farrell spanked three hits for North Jackson in the nightcap, with Jake Kleker, B.J. McFall and Charlie Jackson each adding two hits and two RBIs. Girls Basketball OREGON CITY � Amy Denson scored a game-high 18 points and Jody McLeod added 15 to fuel the Crater High girls to a 57-42 victory over Jesuit Friday at the End of the Trail basketball tournament. The Comets, now 2-0 in the 72-team tournament, meet West Valley High of Washington state today at 10:15 a.m. Friday�s contest was close throughout most of the first half with the Comets earning a 25-19 lead at the break. Midway through the fourth period, the Comets blew the game open by going on a 10-0 run. Carissa Nafie sparked the surge with a pair of transition baskets. Janelle Sapienza added nine points for the Comets. Asha Wilkerson, a 6-foot-1 post, paced Jesuit with 12 points and four rebounds. Bowling BEAVERTON � Crater High�s Holly Gibson finished second at the Oregon Junior Classic Tournament of Champions Sunday. Gibson made the cut in second place, then took third in the stepladder finals in Division A. She also made the all-star team for finishing in the top five. Crater High�s April Everist and Michele Rutigliano also participated in the tournament. Everist finished fourth in Division B while Rutigliano did not make the cut at the Division AA level.
