Jason Ray Morgan, 37, of Grants Pass pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary, second-degree robbery and first-degree aggravated theft in Jackson County Circuit Court for the May 2014 home-invasion robbery. One of the victims had hired Morgan to help the couple move, said Jackson County Deputy District Attorney Nick Geil. Morgan and Medford resident James Lewis Turner, 36, broke into the home on Pioneer Road outside Talent in the early-morning hours wearing ski masks and armed with guns. One of them struck the male victim with a gun and the robbers forced the couple, whom prosecutors described as elderly, into a closet, Geil said. Turner was sentenced last week to five years and 10 months in prison for the crime. During the robbery, Morgan and Turner stole property worth more than $10,000, plus checks they later used. The two took the victims' vehicle and fled to California, Geil said. Geil credited law enforcement officials with conducting an outstanding investigation across state lines to bring the two to justice. Morgan's defense attorney Christine Herbert said Morgan is sorry for what he did. "This was pretty awful, there's no question about that," she said. "Mr. Morgan is remorseful. He wrote the victims a letter and said how bad he felt." The victims were not present in court to testify during the plea and sentencing hearing. "I'm sorry for my actions and I hope to change my life," Morgan said. Turner's court-appointed defense attorney Donald Scales said Turner had been gainfully employed before getting mixed up with drugs and the wrong people. "This is a horrible example of how methamphetamine can destroy an otherwise productive citizen," Scales said last week during his client's plea and sentencing hearing. In addition to being sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, Morgan and Turner were ordered by the court to jointly pay $33,481 to the victims as restitution.
