Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Nov. 16, 1915 NOT ENOUGH RAIN TO ENABLE PLOWING BY THE FARMERS Less than an inch of rain has fallen since the showers began this fall, the precipitation yesterday and last night, up to 5 o'clock this morning, being .39 of an inch. It fell gradually, however, and the thirsty soil got the benefit of all of it. It was just the kind of rain that made the farmer and orchardist glad, although there wasn't enough of it. The illusion that a sufficient rainfall has come to make it easy plowing in the fields of the valley should be dispelled. While the moisture extends probably six inches below the surface in most soils in the valley, they are not yet sufficiently soaked with it to loosen the hard places enough to make it easy plowing. Of course, if the farmer intends merely to skim the surface with his plow, he rubs his hands with glee over what moisure he has received to date. But the real farmer who knows that it is necessary to go down a foot to do simple justice is not yet satisfied to begin his winter plowing. "The face of nature," however, has been washed a little, after a long period of neglect. The rain so far has brightened the foothills with a suggestion of green, showing that the range has been favorably affected. The orchards have been washed clean of dust and cobwebs and, altogether, the precipitation to date has done much good in freshening up the growth of green things in the rural districts. ENGLISH WALNUTS MOST PROFITABLE CROP OF VALLEY Many persons who have visited Rogue River valley this fall have made special inquiry as to the success attending English walnut "experiments" in southern Oregon. Some of these inquiries came from California, where the English walnut grows to perfection and has proven to be a very profitable product. Those who understand the conditions necessary to English walnut production and who know anything about Rogue River valley conditions will tell the visitors that the production of the English walnut here has never been an experiment. In recent years only have a few residents of this valley undertaken to raise English walnuts. The results in every case reported have been happily satisfactory. Those who have undertaken it find that there is no natural reason why the English walnut should not be produced here to perfection. There is no question about the market. So far it has never been satisfied.
