Scoles posts top qualifying marks at state swim meet GRESHAM - Brad Scoles entered the Class 4A state swim meet Friday with one No. 1 seed. He begins the boys finals today with two top seeds. Scoles, an Ashland senior, roared to the fastest qualifying times in the boys 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center. Scoles finished the 100, which he entered as the top seed, in 47.19 seconds. He swam the 200, which he began as the fourth seed, in a personal-record 1 minute, 45.42 seconds. "He had a good day," Grizzlies coach Neil Foley said. "His pulse was really good after both swims. We feel he's capable of going a lot faster (today)." Ashland's 200 freestyle relay squad was disqualified off the start, and sophomore Michelle Smith didn't qualify for the finals in the girls 100 freestyle. As expected, the Roseburg girls posted a strong opening day. Roseburg freshman Kathryn Thompson advanced to the finals in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:11.45 and advanced in the 100 backstroke (58.98). Teammate Jennifer Saylor also qualified for the finals, finishing with the sixth-best mark in the 100 butterfly (59.52), and is an alternate in the 100 backstroke (1:00.11). As a team, Roseburg advanced to the finals with the fourth-best mark in the girls 200 medley relay (1:52.81). In Class 3A/2A/1A swimming, the strongest marks in Friday's preliminaries came in the boys 200 freestyle. Phoenix freshman Justin Heath, Hidden Valley junior Mark Pepitone and Mazama senior Chris Ritter each advanced to the state finals in the 200 freestyle. Ritter notched the second-best mark in the preliminaries at 1:54.96, with Pepitone fourth at 1:56.16 and Heath sixth at 1:57.36. Pepitone also qualified for today's finals in the 100 butterfly with a fifth-best mark of 58.56, while Ritter will be in the 100 freestyle finals (51.54). Heath also advanced to the finals in a second event, posting a second-best time of 5:15.68 in the 500 freestyle. "He's probably going to be right in those places," Phoenix coach Jim Heath said of Justin Heath's chances today. "I don't know if he'll be able to move up much higher than he already is." Others making it to today's finals were Hidden Valley's Lynsey Foree in the girls 50 freestyle (25.90) and 100 freestyle (56.59), and Jessica Morrison of Henley in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.83). In team competition, North Valley advanced to the finals in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:36.53. Alternate individual qualifiers were K.C. Cloyd of Phoenix in the 200 individual medley (2:22.76); Jeff Stone of Phoenix in the 100 backstroke (1:03.48); Hailey Mahoney of North Valley in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.66); Nichole Brown of Mazama in the 500 freestyle (5:57.32); and Jonny Oelkers of Henley in the 500 freestyle (5:36.56). Alternate team qualifiers were Phoenix in the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.68) and Hidden Valley in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.72).
