The Pacific Crest Trail closure has been extended north from Dutton Creek Camp to the PCT parking lot on North Entrance Road. PCT hikers can still use Dutton Creek Trail to the Rim trail as an alternate route. Lightning Springs trail and backcountry camp remain closed. 9:57 a.m.: The Bybee fire burning two miles west of Crater Lake has grown to 120 acres and is 5 percent contained, according to U.S. Forest Service officials. The fire has forced the closure of the Pacific Crest Trail from from Dutton Creek Camp to Red Cone Springs. Hikers must use Dutton Creek Trail to the Rim Trail as an alternate route. The Lightning Springs backcountry campground is also closed, a release from the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership said. Fire crews will continue their assault using air tankers and equipment on the ground, the release said. A second, smaller blaze, called the Mushroom fire, was spotted Friday in the northwest corner of Crater Lake National Park in last year’s Crescent fire area. It was burning in dead and downed timber, the release said. Six smokejumpers with air support were fighting that fire as of Friday evening. Crater Lake National Park remains open to visitors and the Britt Orchestra events will continue as scheduled. Temperatures at Crater Lake will drop back into the 70s over the weekend with a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the region through tonight, the release said.
