Kyle Gillette wasn’t running for food, but he did, possibly, set the table for future success. Two of the region’s top cross country runners turned in breakout performances Saturday at the Chieftain Invitational at Valley of the Rogue State Park. Jordan, a North Medford senior who had her confidence shaken with an early season defeat, ran unopposed nearly the entire race yet still blistered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 26 seconds. Advertisement Phoenix’s Gillette didn’t triumph, but in chasing Brookings-Harbor’s Scott Sanders into the finish chute, the Pirate senior accomplished a season’s PR of 16:02 over 5,000 meters. Sanders, whose strategic surge with less than a quarter-mile remaining proved decisive, won in 16:00. Siuslaw won the 17-team boys title with 53 points. Fifth-place North Valley was the closest area team, scoring 175 points. But back to Jordan, who defended her 2002 title, eclipsed last year’s time by 20 seconds, won by nearly a minute and paced the Black Tornado to the team crown. The only thing she didn’t win was the bet she made with her father, David, over dinner the night before. David Jordan casually mentioned that he’d be in the 5K Stagecoach Run Saturday morning. Whoever had the best time, he suggested, owed the other dinner. "I guess I lost that one," grinned Danielle Jordan after learning Dad ran 17:14, good for first place. His time was withheld from her prior to the race. "It’s McDonald’s for him," said Danielle, adding that she would have gone a bit more upscale were she eating at his expense. The wayward wager, however, did little to dampen Jordan’s spirits on a rare cool, drizzly day for the runners. "This is major confidence for me," said Jordan, "because I wasn’t where I wanted to be." Last year’s Southern Oregon Conference champion, who placed ninth at state despite falling ill during the race, got out of the blocks slowly this fall. Jordan was beaten soundly in the SOC pre-district race by Klamath Union’s Katie Leary — who was running on her home course — then caught a bug that meandered through the team. She persevered to win a couple races, but her performances were largely unremarkable by her standards. She traces part of the problem to dealing with the defeat to Leary. "The mental part of it is something I’ve really been fighting," said Jordan. "She ran a great race and beat me, and it was hard for me to come back. I didn’t realize how much of this sport is mental. It’s a lot." Ninety percent, she guessed. Saturday’s race did wonders for her frame of mind and gave an indication of how fit she is two weeks before the district meet. Black Tornado coach Pete Voskes said Jordan gained much-needed perspective in the weeks since the pre-district meet. "It’s hard to be patient for too long when you work as hard as she does," he said. "She was ready for a breakout race, and it came today." Without anyone to push her, Jordan’s goal was to run faster than last year here, and her strategy was to take each mile at a time. Run one before thinking about the next. It led to a 5:47 first third in the 3.1-mile event. "I thought, ‘Oh, that was quick,’" said Jordan. Her followers must have thought so, too. Lacy Looney of Myrtle Point finished second in 19:25. Rogue River’s Allegra Fety was the next area runner, placing fifth in 19:38. North Medford’s Alicia Preston (12th) and Caitlin Whispell (20th) also cracked the top 20. In the boys race, Gillette was looking forward to the challenge of facing Sanders, like him one of the state’s top Class 3A runners, and Roseburg’s Gavin Weaver. "I needed this race," said Gillette. "The whole season I felt like I couldn’t get a good race. I went out and got after it today. It felt good." Sanders was hoping to run about 15:30, but one of his legs tightened up, possibly from not enough water, he said. "From about a mile in, I had to run on pure heart," said Sanders, adding that if Gillette weren’t shadowing him around the course, he would have backed off considerably. The two played a cat-and-mouse game over the first two miles, not more than a step or two separating them. But with about 300 meters remaining, Sanders sped up, a tactic he’s used often to vanquish competition, he said. "It surprised me that he did that," admitted Gillette. "I thought he would cruise in and turn it up at the end. The surge placement was excellent and caught me off-guard." The silver lining, said Gillette, is that he gained on Sanders, "and that’s good." Weaver was third in 16:29. Rogue River’s Tom McGann placed eighth in 16:52, two spots ahead of teammate Roman Newell, who clocked 16:55.
