The Pirates used a balanced approach to blow away the competition and win its first-ever boys conference title. Phoenix posted a two-day total of 651 in the tournament played Monday at the Grants Pass Golf Club and Tuesday at Harbor Links Golf Course. Second-place Henley was 66 strokes behind the Pirates. Phoenix and Henley will advance to the Class 3A state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Redmond. Blaine Corkill of Henley was medalist with a 36-hole 156, but the Pirates grabbed the next four spots. No players from any other Skyline team qualified for state. Corkill shot a 78 on the first day to take a one-stroke lead over Phoenix freshman J.T. Compher. Corkill posted another 78 on Day 2, while Compher came in at 84 to finish fourth overall (163). The 84 was Compher’s highest round of the year. Advertisement Phoenix senior Chris Troutman and freshman Michael Stanfield tied for second overall at 162. And Kris Kaufman completed the Pirates’ run at the top with a 164, which was good for fifth place — 10 shots better than Hidden Valley’s Kyle Bleser at sixth. "Our kids’ scores don’t go up or down very much," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "We have six kids that can all play well." Phoenix junior Luke Nickodemus tied for sixth overall the first day with an 87, but was substituted in the lineup with freshman Jesse Taylor on Day 2. "These kids are very sound mechanically," said Walker. "We’re capable of putting up a good number at state." This will be the Pirates’ first trip to state since 1997.
