Cascade Christian secures a spot in Class 2A tournament The bad news is, Cascade Christian must play its rival and nemesis today in the Southern Cascade League boys basketball playoffs. The good news is, the Challengers have little to lose because they secured a spot in the Class 2A state tournament Friday with a dominant, 72-56 playoff win over Lost River at Superior Gym. Cascade Christian visits league champion St. Mary's at 2 p.m. today in a game to determine state seeding. "There really isn't that much pressure on either team," said Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse, whose team is 16-9 overall but has lost twice to St. Mary's. "We're just going to go out and try to gain momentum for state. Win or lose, we're still going, and our guys are happy about that." In two previous meetings, St. Mary's won 67-54 at Superior Gym and 67-42 at home. Against Lost River, Mychal Sha scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half, Zach Mellow hauled in 10 rebounds and Brandon Fair made 6 of 7 field goals to lead the Challengers. Lost River battled to its only lead, 19-18, in the second quarter before Cascade Christian went on a 9-0 run. Fair and Jon Gettman each hit 3-pointers and Sha had a three-point play, all within 11/2 minutes. Another 9-0 surge at the start of the third boosted the Challengers' lead to 22 points. SOC Boys Playoff GRANTS PASS 41, ROSEBURG 28, SUSPENDED - At Grants Pass, the playoff game to determine the conference's No. 2 and 3 seeds in the Class 4A state subtournament was suspended because of a power outage with 6 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The game will resume from that point at 4 p.m. today at Heater-Newman Memorial Gym. Grants Pass jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter and led 20-8 at the end of the period. Senior point guard Tyler York sparked the Cavemen with eight points in the quarter. Roseburg was held scoreless until Joe Newton's three-point play with 3:24 left in the opening quarter.
