South splits with Wilson It took a little longer than South Medford baseball fans would have liked, but the Panthers finally were able to break out the bats to secure a non-league split with Wilson at Miles Field on Saturday. After struggling to make contact in a 3-0 first-game loss, South regrouped to edge Wilson, 4-3, in the nightcap. Having struck out eight times in the first game, seven of those looking at the third strike, the Panthers connected for nine hits in Game 2 � including four straight singles in the seventh inning that broke a 3-all tie. "I was really pleased with the way we came back and swung the bats in the second game," said South Medford coach Pete Whisler. "For some reason we�re playing real tight. The kids just need to relax a little more and play." Wilson scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3, but South roared back behind four improbable singles. Jon McCollum got things started with a single, then Jeremy Frantz reached safely when no throw was made on his sacrifice bunt. Cody George followed with a bunt of his own, reaching safely to load the bases for Gerad Stebbins, who stepped up and drilled the game-winner. Stebbins, Frantz and George each had two hits to pace the Panthers (3-3), while Clint Rodreick went the distance for his first win of the season. In the opener, South received a strong pitching performance from Ryan Parker as all three of Wilson�s runs were unearned. Back-to-back errors by South led to Wilson�s first two runs, which proved more than enough as the Panthers struggled offensively. "We had opportunities to score," said Whisler. "We just couldn�t get a big hit with runners on base." Zumwalt also ran his pitching record to 2-0 on the season with a win in the opener. Teammate Ole Sheldon added four hits and a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. In the nightcap, Mike McInerney gave up two hits in five innings to pick up his first win of the season. Craig Baird had two hits for the Indians (5-0) and four RBI, while David Powell and Michael Myhre each added two hits. GRANTS PASS 7, SPRINGFIELD 1 � At Springfield, the only thing able to cool off starter Brady Howe was a 25-minute rain delay as the Cavemen earned a non-conference victory. Howe walked the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings but slipped away unscathed as Springfield couldn�t take advantage. Howe finished with seven strikeouts in a two-hit outing. Andrew Fish went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs to pace Grants Pass (4-1), while Tyler York and Speedy Ortiz each added two hits for the Cavemen. North Valley (2-1) left 11 runners on base and allowed four unearned runs over the last three innings due to five walks. Drew Peterson had an RBI single in the second and Ariah Nead followed with a two-run double to give North Valley its first and last lead. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain.
