Bartlett earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Lake Oswego’s Elle Meyer before Sunset’s Lorissa Yuen made a comeback and secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. In Class 5A action at both West Hills Racquet & Fitness in Portland and Tualatin Hills Tennis Court, No. 1 overall seed in doubles for Ashland, Vika O’Brien and Anne Kim, seized a 6-0, 6-1 win over Johanna Wilson and Anne Miller of The Dalles, setting up today’s quarterfinal with Bend’s Kyla Collier and Sydney Meeuwsen. Ashland’s Ashley Knecht, the third overall seed in singles, took down Crescent Valley’s Caroline Doyle 6-1, 6-2 and will take on Keely Petticord of Wilsonville in the quarterfinals. Boys Tennis STATE TOURNAMENT: Kyler Tosh, Mitch Steadman and the doubles pairing of Ben Vaughn and Keigin Tosh all earned first-round victories for South Medford before being ousted in Round 2 on the opening day of the Class 6A state tournament at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. Kyler Tosh, the Panthers’ top seed, rallied to beat Sprague’s Logan Blair in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 before Central Catholic’s Joey Schwartz got the best of Tosh with a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Steadman took down Dylan Wirth of West Albany, 6-2, 6-2, then suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at the hand of sixth-seeded Andrew Finkelman of Grant. The Vaughn-Tosh combo battled Sprague’s Nate Harder and Thomas Schaap for a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory. Vaughn and Tosh were dispatched by the second-seeded pairing of Ryan Chin and Jared Lin of Sunset, 6-3, 6-2. Jonathan Williams of Grants Pass lost in the opening round to McMinnville’s Daniel Post, who got a 6-3, 6-2 win. Williams plays Blair in the consolation quarterfinals today. At the Class 5A level, Ashland’s doubles team of Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton made quick work of Putnam’s Matthew Ciobanasiu and Thomas Ciobanasiu for a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the opening round, setting up a quarterfinals bout with Summit’s Logan Hausler and Daniel Pino. Matches were played at both West Hills Racquet & Fitness in Portland as well as Tualatin Hills Tennis Court. The Grizzlies’ Mischa Kirby will take on Sandy’s Dante DeSimone in the consolation quarterfinals after Hood River Valley’s Scottie Zeigner picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win in the first round. David Lee and Kai Weston were also banished to the consolation quarterfinals after being upended by Sandy’s Sebastian Galvin and Nash Idler, who earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph. Lee and Weston take on Summit’s Josh Maitre and Peter Rutherford. Baseball ST. MARY’S 11, LAKEVIEW 1, 6 inn.: Spencer McCabe threw a one-hitter to help St. Mary’s sew up a Class 3A state playoff spot with a victory in the Southern Cascade League playoffs at U.S. Cellular Community Park. The Crusaders (18-9) will try to improve their seeding position and take the No. 1 spot from Cascade Christian at 6 tonight at U.S. Cellular. After allowing an early single, McCabe was nearly flawless in six innings on the mound. He allowed one run, walked five and struck out 11. Ben Robinson gave the Crusaders the win via 10-run mercy rule with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to left field that brought home Tanner Smith. Robinson finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. In the third inning, Joe Johnson had an inside-the-park home run for the Crusaders. Lakeview earlier eliminated Rogue River with a 10-1 win in a matchup of the SCL’s Nos. 3-4 teams. Softball ILLINOIS VALLEY 35, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 23: Cascade Christian wasn’t able to hold off Illinois Valley, which rallied and eliminated the Challengers from the state playoff hunt in a league playoff game at U.S. Cellular. The Challengers (6-12), who were unable to pitch their usual starter Shaylee Ledesma due to soreness in her shoulder, allowed 12 runs in the fourth inning and 13 in the fifth. The Cougars won in six innings on the 10-run mercy rule. Allison McMahon and Marli Martin both went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Ledesma went 3-for-4 and Kelsey Bogue scored four times and drove in two runs. Bogue and Ellie Brown both went 2-for-3. Allison Primeau provided a grand slam for Illinois Valley in the fifth inning. The Cougars were eliminated by Lakeview in a later Southern Cascade League playoff game.
