Crusaders, Challengers split softball tilts JACKSONVILLE -- Cascade Christian began Saturday leading the District 6 softball standings and managed to retain a share of first place after gaining a split with St. Mary's. The Crusaders captured the opener 1-0 before the Challengers rallied for a 6-2 triumph in Game 2. Shawna Jackson of St. Mary's opened the game with the only hit surrendered by Cascade starter Cheryl Gordon, took second on an error and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a pickoff attempt. That was the only help St. Mary's junior pitcher Lani Brophy needed as she blanked the Challengers on three hits and ran her record to 10-3. She struck out nine, including the last six batters she faced, and walked two. Cascade threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, loading the bases before Brophy escaped the jam by getting Erin Eselin to hit a ground ball to short. Gordon allowed just four batters to reach base, striking out four and walking three. In the second game, Shelly Nicholson lashed a two-run single in the fourth inning and Gordon drilled another two-run base hit in the fifth as the Challengers came back from a 2-0 deficit. Sophomore Laural Kelley scattered four hits, struck out five and walked none to notch her sixth win in seven outings. "No walks made me really happy," Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye said. "That was a big win for us." Gordon and Hannah Gettman had two hits each for the Challengers (8-8) in the second game.
