The Pirates, after leading 23-19 at the half, pitched a 14-0 shutout in the third quarter and rode the hot shooting hand of Ashley McCarty to post a 46-28 Skyline Conference victory over Mazama. McCarty finished with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jaclyn Unruh and Kat Cox each added 12. After forcing just four turnovers in the first half the Pirates tightened up their defensive pressure over the final 16 minutes. "We picked up the tempo (in the second half) a little bit," said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker, whose team caused 17 second-half turnovers. "We were able to make them make some mistakes and convert on the opportunities we did have." Cox grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots, while Sarah Kieffer led the defensive surge with five steals. Advertisement "I think Sarah always does a tremendous job for us (in the press)," said Walker of his senior guard. "She can run all night long and she’s quick as can be. I can always count on her." The Pirates improved to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in the Skyline, while Mazama fell to 3-14 and 2-7 in conference.
