Letters to the Editor, Jan. 30 Monday Jan 30, 2017 at 12:01 AM The first 100 days As he has asked, and without reservation, we should plan to offer our new president the benefit of the doubt — in exactly the same sense as he, his tea party fellow travelers, and the Republican Party “establishment” has ever offered Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt as to his judgement, qualifications, citizenship, patriotism, personhood, principles and intentions. The compulsive Twittermeister is an instinctive huckster and street fighter, so there is no point in “going high” when he and his sycophants go habitually low. They would only treat extension of an olive branch as a sign of weakness and another opportunity to denigrate progressivism as wussy and effete. There can be no concession to Trump because he is in the game for self-aggrandizement and the fame of being famous in the absence of any other principles. Given his adolescent braggadocio, this emperor stands naked for his astounding paucity of ideas and goodwill. Huge, folks; amazing! But sad, so sad! Of course, he didn’t exactly elect himself, did he? Undeniably, his inarticulate and scattershot anger accompanied by ethnic and racial animus had great appeal to many voters. He has, however, been inaugurated, not ordained. It’ll be like never before! Guaranteed! Gary R. Collins Jacksonville Where do they stand? Where do Republicans stand on providing a clean, livable future for kids? Sometimes small vignettes tell us where there hearts really are. We know that the best way to counter catastrophic climate change caused by global warming is to reduce fossil fuel for generating electricity for home, industrial and transportation use. Wyoming Republican legislators, however, are not interested in leveling the playing field between renewable energy and fossil fuels; these enemies of people and the future are so beholden to the fossil fuel forces of evil that they want to ban Wyoming utilities from using renewable energy. This serves only their masters in fuel corporations while guaranteeing dirty air and health risk for Wyoming residents and children and assuring increased global warming and climate change catastrophic globally. Wyoming Republicans are not alone. Across the nation, Republican states and congressional representatives seem committed to promoting fossil fuels, toxic air and global warming by undermining renewable energy and clean air programs. It is a sign of human basic decency simply to support renewable energy when ever possible. Barbara Gurschke Medford Hard to give Trump a chance We have been asked to "give Trump a chance." That is hard when the first press briefing given under this administration includes false statements that Kellyanne Conway is calling "alternative facts." Trump did not like hearing that the crowd size at his inauguration was smaller than Obama's. When Trump does not like hearing something, he calls it a lie, from the “the most dishonest human beings on Earth" or "overrated" individuals. Don't believe me. Check it out for yourself.
