And the junior’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed as she was one of three SOC competitors selected to the Class 4A all-state first team, as voted by the state’s coaches. Davidson hit .429 with seven RBIs in conference play out of the cleanup spot and helped spark the Comets’ run to the state semifinals with a number of impressive games at the plate. "I think a lot of the exposure came in the playoffs," said Crater coach Chris Arnold. "I know Kirstin had a nice run in the playoffs with the bat. I think when coaches voted they remember how well she did." Davidson was joined on the all-state list by Comet teammates Janelle Cristofaro, a second-team selection at pitcher, and third-team shortstop Tyler Sutherland. Advertisement South Medford also had three on the list, with Jackie Chaplin making the second unit and Alex Jordahl and Jen Mendenhall making honorable mention. Roseburg, which lost in the state championship game to Southridge after finishing second in the SOC to Crater, placed junior shortstop Ali Paz and senior utility player Kim Posey on the first team. Roseburg’s Tony Campos was named coach of the year and Churchill pitcher Kelly Dyer was named player of the year. Cristofaro, who made honorable mention last season, capped off her impressive pitching career with a 20-4 record during her senior campaign. "Janelle is a performer," said Arnold. "She’s not motivated by numbers, she just does whatever needs to be done to help the team get a win." Sutherland committed just one error at shortstop and batted .378 with 15 RBIs in her final season. The senior had plenty of competition at the loaded shortstop position state-wide. "No question about it, the infield was tough," Arnold said. "This year, particularly in the SOC, there were some great athletes coming out of the infield." Chaplin, who played shortstop and third base, hit over .400 for the second time in her four years on varsity for South. Mendenhall was 6-2 on the mound in the SOC with a 0.40 ERA during her senior season and Jordahl hit .363 after missing her junior year with an injury. "All three were definitely deserving," said South Medford coach Dan Marshall. "I called them the Big Three because they led our team physically, spiritually and emotionally. It was great they were honored at the state level. "We’re going to miss having those kids around next year." In the Class 3A ranks, Phoenix’s Shonda George, the Skyline Conference player of the year, made the second team, while teammates Taylor Barrett and Tawnya Tidwell were honorable mention selections. George (second base) led Phoenix with a .417 average, 12 steals and four triples at the leadoff spot. Tidwell (outfield) and Barrett (pitcher) were both first-team all-Skyline performers. The Pirates won the conference title and hosted a state-playoff game where they lost an extra-inning affair to Sherwood. "When you play just one game in the state playoffs you never know what will happen with the selections," said Phoenix coach Molly Pendergast. "I think all three were very deserving of their recognition." Rogue River’s Cassie Giesbrecht (junior catcher) made the honorable mention list, while Illinois Valley’s Ricci Coultas (senior catcher) also made honorable mention. Kellye Deporte (junior infield) made honorable mention for North Valley. Henley had senior utility player Kristin Brunelle on the first team and fellow senior Nikki Hargrave made honorable mention. Mazama was represented by sophomore Ashlie McDaniel (second team outfield) and junior Danielle Stratton (third team infield). Taft senior pitcher Ashley Birdsong was named 3A player of the year, while her coach, Tom Trunt, earned 3A coach-of-the-year honors.
