Wilson wins in third round Staff, wire reports TACOMA, Wash. Super heavyweight Mike Wilson of Crater High, a U.S. Olympic alternate, entered more than a ring Tuesday night. With the United States and Puerto Rico tied after early bouts in their dual meet at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Wash., Wilson walked straight into high drama. The event was billed as the Sendoff to Sydney and the U.S. team needed two victories to clinch it. Walter Wright of Seattle delivered one and Wilson the other, stopping Ruben Bracero in the third round. "Mike dominated he just outhustled him (Bracero)," said Joe Pedrojetti, the owner of Medfords Bulldog Boxing Club and Wilsons trainer. Wilson, 17, will now represent the U.S. against Ireland in October at the U-19 world championships. Another highlight for the U.S. Tuesday came from Jose Navarro at 112 pounds. Navarro, 19, won the closest match of the evening, beating Carlos Valcarcel. The judges score had the two boxers tied at 21 after four rounds so the fight was decided on raw punches thrown, with Navarro holding an 84-64 edge. Navarro, from Los Angeles, stunned Valcarcel in the early going of the third round with a combination of punches, bloodying his opponents nose. The other U.S. Olympian competing Tuesday was Cincinnatis Ricardo Williams Jr., who lost 28-22 to Miguel Cotto at 139 pounds. Williams came out slow in the first two rounds, allowing Cotto to take a sizable lead. He came out strong to start the third round, nearly knocking Cotto down midway through the round. Williams had Cotto on the ropes in the fourth and final round but couldnt knock him down. The card was cut from 11 scheduled matches to seven as Puerto Rico failed to field three boxers. U.S. Olympian David Jackson, a Seattle resident, failed to make weight at 132 pounds, missing by one pound. Other U.S. winners were Teaunce Shephert at 132 pounds and Walter Wright of Seattle at 147. Karoz Norman lost for the United States at 106 pounds and Aaron Garcia lost at 119.
