A household door lock from a local hardware store ranges in cost from about $25 to $150. The door handles and locks slated for 17 out of 18 campuses in the Medford School District are estimated at $300 each. That amount includes both the hardware — a mortise lock — and the labor for installation, explained Ken Ogden, principal of Ogden Roemer Wilkerson Architecture, the Medford-based firm that estimated bond project costs for the district. Under law, school locks must furnish more security and durability than the conventional household lock. "They have to be bulletproof and heavy duty," Ogden said. "They need to release from a single action of turning the knob." The hardware must also comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, meaning pupils with disabilities affecting their fine-motor skills should be able to open the doors.
