COLLEGE ROUNDUP Raider relay team second at nationals MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 7, 2015 @ 7:30 pm Posted Mar. 7, 2015 @ 7:30 pm » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> GENEVA, Ohio — The Southern Oregon University men’s distance medley relay team placed second and Amelia Maguin was fifth in the women’s 400-meter dash finals Saturday as the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships came to a close at the SPIRE Institute. The Raider DMR squad — which had won the last two indoor titles but lost two runners from that record-setting team — was 0.62 seconds short of a third straight championship, finishing as runner-up to Concordia (Ore.) with a time of 9:54.37. Zach Boyd-Helm ran the 1,200-meter portion, JJ Latu took the 400, Kevin Jorgensen legged out the 800 and Jared Hixon was the anchor with the final mile. Boyd-Helm and Jorgensen had run the same legs on SOU’s last two championship teams. Hixon — who’s also been an All-American in the outdoor 1,500 and at the NAIA Cross Country Championships in the last 10 months — was new to the event, as was Latu, who serves as a return specialist and running back on SOU’s football team. Maguin – a two-time 400-meter hurdle national runner-up – became a 400 All-American for the first time and ran a personal-best 55.94. Wayland Baptist’s Bianca Farrington won with a time of 54.60. Softball SOUTHERN OREGON 2-5, SIMPSON 3-2: At Ashland, pitcher Cheyenne Bricker helped Southern Oregon end its skid against 10th-ranked Simpson (Calif.) and earn the split. Bricker went to 8-2 on the season with her fifth complete game — a six-hitter in which she didn’t allow a run until four straight Redhawks reached with two outs in the seventh inning. That win occurred after SOU’s third loss in a row to Simpson. Ryan Norton singled in Kaylana Mah for the winning run with one out in the seventh inning. The Raiders finished their nonleague slate with a record of 19-9. They’ll play an alumni game at 11 a.m. today before diving into Cascade Conference action next Friday and Saturday at Northwest (Wash.) and Concordia (Ore.). Brianne Craig was the tough-luck loser in the opener. She went seven innings, allowing nine hits and walking two with three strikeouts. In Game 2, SOU scored five times in the first three innings, though only two of the runs Kacey Pokorny allowed were earned. The first unearned run was Kelsey Randall, who reached on an error and scored on Megan Winton’s bloop single. Gina Ayala ripped a two-out RBI single in the second, and the Raiders went up 3-0 in the third when Randall singled and Alexa Gonzalez doubled her home. A throwing error immediately brought in the next run, and Kristin Ahern completed the rally with an RBI single to score Winton. Gonzalez went 2-for-2 and Randall scored twice. Baseball OREGON 7, ST. JOHN'S 2: At Eugene, David Peterson allowed two runs over seven-plus innings to lead Oregon at PK Park. Phil Craig-St. Louis opened the scoring for the Ducks (12-2) with a RBI fielders choice after Oregon loaded the bases in the fourth. Austin Grebeck tacked on another run in the fifth with a solo home run to left field to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Brandon Cuddy extended the Ducks lead in the seventh with a two-RBI single after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Cuddy came around to score when Craig-St. Louis laced a base hit into right-center to give the Ducks a 5-0 lead. Peterson (2-0) cruised through seven shutout innings, scattering six hits and striking out seven. OREGON STATE 5-12, FRESNO STATE 2-2: At Corvallis, Oregon State swept the doubleheader at Goss Stadium. The Beavers, who have won eight straight, took Game 1 on the strength of a two-run home run by Gabe Clark in the third inning that pushed OSU (12-3 overall) to a 4-1 lead. The Beavers had scored in the first when Fresno State committed an error and Kyle Nobach hit a sacrifice fly. The win went to Drew Rasmussen, who started and worked 7 1/3 innings. The freshman improved to 2-0 after allowing eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts. It was all OSU’s offense in the second game. Jeff Hendrix led Oregon State with four runs batted in while KJ Harrison homered and doubled. Gabe Clark recorded four hits to pace the Beavers, who tallied 16 off four Fresno State pitchers.
