Firefighters responded to the 2900 Block of Crater Lake Avenue just before 7 a.m., according to Medford Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fish. A column of smoke pouring from a white, single-story house was visible across town as four Medford Fire-Rescue engines and a brush rig responded near the intersection of Delta Waters Road along with police, utility crews and a Mercy Flights ambulance. "They had fire showing out the front window of the living room, the doorway, and fire out the back," Fish said. "So it was well involved by the time (crews) got here." Twenty or so firefighters knocked down the flames within 25 minutes following a 7-minute response time, but not before the fire heavily damaged the garage, attic and much of the interior. About four people were in the home when the fire started, but no serious injuries were reported. One occupant suffered smoke inhalation but declined transportation to the hospital, Fish said. Crater Lake Avenue was closed off between Delta Waters Road and Bradbury Street with fire trucks, utility vehicles and police cars crowding the scene. No other structures were damaged by the flames. "The spacing, the way they put these houses in here, there's pretty good room," Fish said. "Some of the newer houses they're putting in, you can almost touch the side when you put your hands out, and that's been a little bit of a problem for us, but we're working on that with our planning people." The cause of the fire is still unknown. A damage estimate was not immediately available, but Fish said he thought it's likely a total loss.
