Ashland Ski Area has opened today following a morning closure forced by high winds. Half-day tickets will be offered for noon to 4 p.m., along with tickets for twilight skiing from 3 to 9 p.m. National Weather Service officials said in a winter weather advisory issued this morning that up to a foot of new snow could fall by day's end at Mt. Ashland. The ski area reports 109 inches of snow on the upper mountain, 71 inches at the lodge and a seasonal snowfall total of 224 inches. Up to 14 inches of new snow are also expected at Crater Lake today. Most other areas in the advisory, which includes the Cascades and Siskiyous, could see up to 10 inches. The advisory also covers Highway 138 near Diamond Lake and highways 62 and 230 near Crater Lake. "Moderate to heavy snow is expected late this morning into this afternoon, then decreasing through the evening," the advisory reads. Snowfall seems to even be reaching down as low as the Siskiyou Summit, according to Oregon Department of Transportation officials, though it's not accumulating on the actual roadway yet. "We have bare pavement, but it's snowing pretty good, and snow is building up on the shoulders," said ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming. Plows are currently grooming snow on shoulders along and near the summit, he added. "Even though it looks like we're heading into spring, you get up higher and winter's continuing on," Leaming said.
