Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 13, 2005 Recovery Fair event focuses on family health By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune A free downtown event Wednesday will focus on drug and alcohol addiction and the road to recovery. The Jackson County Recovery Fair will bring services for addicts and their families along with successful recovery stories to the county Justice Building courtyard, 100 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford. Held from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the fair will feature a free barbecue and activities for children. "We’re targeting several different avenues — children, teens and adults," said organizer Jeff Pruitt. Testing for HIV and Hepatitis C will be provided free of charge along with Hepatitis A and B shots, courtesy of Jackson County Health and Human Services. Free fluoride treatments and a car seat clinic will focus on children’s health and safety. Kids can receive free stuffed animals and balloons. Health and human services also will take complimentary family photos. Information on drug and alcohol treatment programs and housing for recovering addicts will be available. Kolpia Counseling and Phoenix Counseling Services plan to be on hand to offer support for families of addicts, said John Hamilton, coordinator of the county’s Community Family Court. Advertisement "It’s a free opportunity for families to ask questions about addiction," Hamilton said. Following an opening address by Sen. Alan Bates, D-Ashland, the microphone will be open for former addicts who want to relate their battle with drugs and alcohol. Organizers hope the Recovery Fair will become an annual event in conjunction with National Recovery Month, Pruitt said. Themselves recovering addicts, graduates of the Community Family Court program orchestrated the event to draw attention to individuals who have kicked a drug and alcohol habit. Community Family Court serves individuals who face multiple legal problems, including criminal charges and loss of custody of their children to the state. "Our community has all but been held hostage by methamphetamine addicts," Hamilton said. "Hopefully this is a good antidote to all the horrible stuff."
