Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. Determination and resilience are nothing short of astonishing in this teen who endured years of molestation and rape. A passionate student, the girl’s dearest wish is more time with her counselor, help with her studies and the chance to participate in sports. Sexually abused by a relative, the girl also was repeatedly victimized when a family member sold her for sex, said Susan Moen, executive director of Jackson County Sexual Assault Response Team. In foster care, which should have been a refuge, the girl bounced between a half-dozen homes locally, feeling less and less wanted, before she obtained a permanent placement, said Moen. Now 16, the girl suffers severe post-traumatic stress disorder, said Moen, but is eager to attend college and takes a challenging load of advanced classes at a local high school. The teen’s dearest wish is the means to extend her counseling for sexual trauma, which has been an emotional lifeline, after sessions that SART furnishes run out. She also dreams of math and science tutoring. Joining a team would help this girl feel more like her peers. Gift cards to American Eagle Outfitters would purchase sneakers, sportswear and some winter clothing. The teen also is interested in yoga and martial arts classes that she could attend at the local YMCA, said Moen. A yoga mat and basic equipment would promote inner peace and healing. Because most survivors of sexual assault feel so alone in their pain, said Moen, the greatest gift is reassurance that they are wanted and needed in their community.
