Bennett's gem keeps Colts' season alive By Staff reports Jul 26, 2018 11:07 PM A A NORTH BEND — With their season on the line, the South Medford Colts got a pitching performance that let them see another day. Colts starting pitcher Bennett Smith threw a five-hit shutout to lead South Medford to a 7-0 win over the Klamath Falls Cardinals in an elimination game at the American Legion A state tournament at Clyde Allen Field on Thursday afternoon. Smith, who improved his record to 4-0, needed all of 81 pitches to finish off his second shutout of the season. He finished with five strikeouts and walked a pair of Klamath Falls batters. South Medford (16-11 overall) gave Smith a nice early lead to work with, building a 4-0 lead after just two innings. Smith’s batterymate, catcher Charlie Campbell, hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first to get the Colts on the board. Campbell finished with a pair of hits in the game. Steven Ledendecker, who came into score on Campbell’s first-inning single, finished with a pair runs scored and stole three bases. Colts third baseman David Valdez had South Medford’s lone extra-base hit of the game and made a pair of standout defensive plays in the field. South Medford faces Area 4 rival North Jackson in another elimination game today at noon. The Colts went 3-1 against the Royals in the regular season. HILLSBORO 14, NORTH JACKSON 1: At North Bend, Hillsboro hammered out 15 hits and scored 10 unanswered runs en route to a five-inning blowout win over North Jackson in a winner’s bracket game at the American Legion A state tournament at Clyde Allen Field. Skysox starting pitcher Jacob Woodberry tossed a complete-game four-hitter to pick up the win and also recorded one of his team’s two extra-base hits in the game. The other was a three-run home run off the bat of Jackson Koons in the top of the fifth. Kolbi Blevins finished 3-for-3 and drove in North Jackson’s lone run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. North Jackson (20-11) faces South Medford in an eliminate game at noon today. Great West League CHICO 5, MEDFORD 4: At Chico, Calif., thanks to Andrew Meggs’ two-run walk-off double down the right field line against Rogues relief pitcher Gabe Smith with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Great West League-leading Chico was able to complete a three-game sweep of Medford at Nettleton Stadium. The Rogues (26-24) took their first lead of the game, 4-3, in the top of the seventh when Tate Cowden drew a bases-loaded walk against Chico relief pitcher Christian Stiegele Chico (40-11), however, got both the tying and winning runs on base against Smith thanks to a Medford error to lead off the inning and Smith hitting a batter. That set the stage for Meggs, who worked the count full and then walked it off with his third hit of the night. Medford fell behind 3-1 before tying the game in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Marcus Lydon and Blake Baumgartner. Medford opens a three-game series against the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox (14-34) at 7:05 p.m. tonight.
