Crater Lake Charter Academy dedicated its new digs Friday at 140 E. Main St., the old Eagle Point Junior High, and held an open house to give potential students a look at what the district-sponsored charter school has to offer. The school launched in 2014-15 as a means to recoup some of the 400 students being lost to the Eagle Point School District at charter schools in outlying areas. Students met in a smaller building with room for about 200 students. Enrollment quickly grew to 250 with a waiting list of 50. Director Bryan Wood said students started this school year in their new space as renovations were being completed. "We did a pretty significant renovation — refurbished and repainted and added new rooms. We went from less than 5,000 square feet to over 8,000 square feet. That put us up to an allotment of, right now, 300 students," Wood said. Eagle Point resident Sara McKinney said the charter school had done well for her two children, each with different styles of learning and different educational needs. "I had one student who was struggling, and Crater Lake Academy has given her a chance to move in and feel comfortable again, while I had another student who was an honor student at North Medford and transferred here to start working toward college credits," McKinney said. "My older student, my junior, is now attending (Rogue Community College) through the charter school and is actually graduating on time but with almost enough credits for his two-year degree. "I think the charter schools are a great opportunity for kids to embrace their own education, whereas mainstream and public schools are trying to fit everybody at the same time, which doesn't always work." McKinney's younger student, Aiden Pitner, said the charter school helped motivate her to want to learn. "All the teachers and staff here are really engaging. For a while, I was struggling because I couldn't ask my teachers for help," said the sophomore. "Now, I feel like I can talk to them without feeling scared at all, which is definitely important. There are so many different personalities and ways that people can learn, but in public school only a few of those options are open. Here, the teachers are able to tailor the teaching to the students." Wood said school officials were excited to have attracted so many students in fewer than two full school years. "We are hopeful to see more growth in the future and the ability to serve as many students that would like to attend the charter school," he said.
