City lifts curtain Sunday on restored N. Mountain Park ASHLAND -- The city is inviting the community to a restoration celebration at North Mountain Park from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The celebration will highlight the restoration of the North Mountain Park's natural area, near the intersection of North Mountain Avenue and Hersey Street. At the celebration, people can enjoy the park's butterfly garden and learn about the park while eating ice cream and participating in a raffle. Wildlife Images also will have an exhibit at the park. Ashland Parks and Recreation employees began restoring part of the park back to its natural state this summer. The floodplain and riparian portions of the park are being improved after decades of framing and gravel mining. The goal of the restoration project is to increase the health, function and plant and animal diversity in and around Bear Creek. The project includes enhancing two wetland ponds, improving fish habitat, developing backwater areas in the creek to provide refuge for young salmon and steelhead, and constructing an interpretive trail and boardwalk for wildlife observation.
