The Buckskin fire, burning about six miles north of the California border and a mile south of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in the Baldface Creek area of Curry County, is now more than 1,200 acres in size, according to a news release from the Oregon Department of Forestry. Officials with Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 3, which assumed command of the fire Saturday, said the use of firefighting aircraft was limited on Friday by strong winds, which also contributed to the growth of the fire. The fire is burning in a scar of dead snags left by the 2002 Biscuit fire, which burned more than a half million acres over six months. Forestry officials said the blaze is believed to be a holdover from a wave of lightning strikes across Southern Oregon earlier this week. Satellite imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the smoke plume from the fire being carried southwest, over the coast of Northern California. The North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District reported that Crescent City and the Smith River area may be impacted by smoke from the fire. There are 145 personnel on the fire, including five ground crews, a water tender and six helicopters. The U.S. Forest Service said Friday that the hotshot crews were being reallocated to the Buckskin fire from other smaller fires in the area. Officials said the steep terrain and dead snags make attacking the fire on the ground extremely hazardous for hotshot crews, who are considering other options for indirect attack. Officials said temporary flight restrictions have been placed on the airspace over the fire, and are urging motorists to be cautious of heavy fire-related traffic on Highway 199. A formal closure of the area is in the works, according to a news release from the incident management team. A red flag warning remains in effect through Sunday afternoon, as officials fear low humidity and high temperatures may fuel further growth of the fire. Curry County emergency management officials aren't planning or expecting any evacuations, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
