It is ridiculous how easy technology has enabled abuse. From bullying, to ripping people off, to theft, grand larceny, drug dealing and buying, threatening people or buildings — I could go on and on about how technology and the Internet have enabled the worst of us to suddenly become the loudest among us. Ryan Medford Appalled by naming As a current resident of Medford who grew up in Roseburg I must say that I was both appalled and deeply saddened by the Mail Tribune’s decision to post the name of the shooter of the Umpqua Community College tragedy that took place last Thursday. I would have hoped that this newspaper would have chosen to respect the victims, the affected families and the decision of Roseburg’s sheriff and other city officials to refrain from the use of the shooter’s name. To print his name is to honor his actions. He wanted notoriety and you have contributed to that. Shame on you. Rachel Eckstein Medford Cover mental health treatment Regarding checklists to inform us on the characteristics of mental health problems, I applaud Dr. Susan Elsom's opinion. The most important change toward treating and curing those who suffer with depression, anxiety and related illnesses lies within the power of medical insurance providers. Full long-term treatments are rarely covered by insurance or are covered minimally at best. Successful treatment begins with proper assessment by primary providers to first determine if another disease is the source of the mental illness. Secondly, medications properly monitored along with continued counseling is critical. As long as insurance providers keep adequate mental health treatment out of their benefits, depression and anxiety will lead to a host of medical problems, loss of work and continued suffering of those in need. Marylata Elton Jacksonville Truth was a victim Following the liberal dogma of "never letting a good crisis go to waste," the president wasted little time getting to the podium the day of the Roseburg massacre to politicize the tragedy and advance his agenda. The president saw this murderous anti-Christian killing spree as an opportunity to go after his real enemies: the Constitution and millions of law-abiding gun owners. Again, this occasion showed the president is not a serious person. If he were, he would use his bully pulpit to denounce th dozens of murders weekly in those bastions of liberal domination such as Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, etc. In the past two weeks the Chicago body count was 23 killed with 111 wounded. The vast majority of those victims, if not all of them, were killed with weapons stolen or purchased on the black market. The 20,000 gun laws on the books are of no concern to the criminal. Contributing to the president's ideological opposition to legal gun ownership were the media, which printed his statements as factual. They were not. This was a sad occasion made worse by the president's ideology, pandering and distortions of the truth. Again, truth was a victim. Lynn C.
