Pioneers overcome SOU men PORTLAND -- Scott Davis scored 21 points, Todd Meyerding added 20 and Jeff Auxier had 19 to lead Lewis & Clark College to a 95-63 victory over Southern Oregon in a men's college basketball game on Tuesday night. The host Pioneers roared to an early 35-6 lead and led 41-20 at halftime in winning their first game of the season against two losses. The Raiders are also 1-2. Shavon Haynes led SOU with 14 points and Nick Klemenhagen had 13. "We were awful defensively," SOU coach Brian McDermott said. "We're nowhere close to where we need to be. "We can't guard the ball. We can't stop the other team from penetrating and when you can't stop that then it screws everything else up." The Raiders played without junior guard Tom Chipps, who missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle. "It hurts not having him but our problems are much deeper than missing one guy," McDermott said. SOU got off to a terrible start as it turned the ball over 10 times on its first 17 possessions to help Lewis & Clark bolt to its big early lead. Meyerding and Davis added seven and six assists, respectively. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
