WILLIAM SIMON WALL
Familiarly know as "Uncle Bill," William Wall, who in 81 years
Old, was about the yOungest resident to ever take up his Abode at
Fort Inge (about tile lilies below the present town of Uvalle). 114 was
four months old whoa Ms parents stopped there on their tPek west
from Springfield, MiSlouri, in 1856.
Bill wall was raised in a family of nine children, learning how
to take care of himoStf when only a tot. His father and he men who
rode with him taught
heir children early the necessity ti ride, rope
and shoot better the* the other fellow. Consequently, 1041 and the
other shildren grew up as hard riders, expert ropers and fine aarks-
men with pistol or rifle. The following experiences are 'old in his
own words:
"There was nothiag here but a few Mexican aabine doll& near the
Leona (River) and something like a half -dozen whits familtes. Maybe

"hen -*we went to the Frio Canyon, vre jumt built a little clamp and
pilod up logs and st yed behind them so that when the Indians would owls
don on us e had protection. When we worked, there was always Ate an
stood on watch all the time so thrt the Indians couldn't slip np on us
and uhoot us in the beck. I have been in lots of fights with them.

It wasn't no trisk for him. They, on d turn wild salvos out of the pen
and some of the boys would say, 'Bop, catch that self!' Ue'd taks after
it afoot and catch it by the tail end turn it a sowerset. re used to go
Maverick hunting and he would rid. up to a Maverick and leave his hors* and
:take after it afoot and sat** it by the tail and turn it a somereet. -He'd
always catch 'am that way. He couldn't rope a thing, hardly, but he Would

',When I wasA boy, its sould stand anything. I never thought about
getting hurt. That was expeated. And we didn't have to have no great big
lot of stuff with us on a sow hunt, either. Milt the tima 46 didn't have
a skillet along to soak breed with. After we got to where we fault get
flour, we'd-maks our broad and roll it an a stick and hold it over the coals.
We always had fresh neat in eamp and never had anything ,along to sock it in,

and let it cook all night. Next morning, you could take, your pocket knife and
