Clarence (Tommy) Rankin Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 10, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Sep. 10, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Clarence (Tommy) Rankin Jan. 1, 1936 - Aug. 17, 2015 Tom was born to Clarence and Vida Farlow Rankin, January 1, 1936 in Portland, Oregon and was raised in Crescent City and the Rogue Valley. He was a long-haul truck driver in his early driving years working alongside his father he worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Del Norte County and later, on the Alaska Pipeline. Returning to the Rogue Valley in 1985 he continued with driving for the many trucking and logging companies in Southern Oregon. He retired from Erickson Air Crane Wildland fire crews due to illness. A great quote by his grandson Tyler, “Our family lost a wonderful man on August 17, 2015. He was a father that he didn’t have to be, a grandfather you could only wish for, and a role model for us as we grew up.” On November 12, 1983 in LaPine, Oregon he was married to Frances Stout Thompson who was by his side along with grandson Bryce, when he passed away at home. During their marriage he had the opportunity to drive EMS vehicles for several ambulance services and was recognized as a volunteer of the year several times. Tom enjoyed anything to do with horses, Bingo, family, and grandchildren. He loved the annual family picnic held every June. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry (Betty) Rankin; his sister, Judy Atkinson (Richard); and his son-in-law, Steve (Debra) Hoecker. Tom left behind a family of seven children put together by marriage and love: three sons, Dean and Kevin Rankin, Northpole, Alaska, and Randy (Lois) Thompson, Grants Pass, Ore. Four daughters, Debra Hoecker, Las Vegas, Nevada; Robin (Buba) Reames and Tammy Hanks, South Carolina; and Candice Graham, White City, Oregon. Twelve grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and five nieces, along with his childhood best friend, Gary Fletcher (Crescent City) and his aunt, Edith Farlow of Eagle Point. Cremation by Hillcrest Memorial with no services planned at the current time. A celebration of life will be held when all the family is able to be here.
