She can tell stories that put listeners rolling in the aisles, then sing a song that leaves them wiping tears from their eyes. She can carry on serious discussions about current events, then turn and sing a song that brings howls of laughter. Her shows are like an emotional roller coaster. With a set list written out on a crumpled piece of paper, she picks and chooses which of her original songs to play and which requests from audiences to grant. Between the songs, her stories show as much diversity. Each time she tells one, it is a little different than the last. Weaver will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Grizzly Peak Winery, 1600 E. Nevada St., Ashland. The show kicks off St. Clair Productions' 20th annual Eclectic Music Series. See www.stclairevents.com for information about the series. Wisconsin singer and songwriter Peter Mulvey will open Weaver's show. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased online at stclairevents.com or at Music Coop, 268 E. Main St. Tickets are $22 at the door, $10 for ages 12 through 17. Kids 11 and younger get in free. Jeven's Tex Mex Barbecue will be at the site, and wine will be available from Grizzly Peak. With more than a dozen albums to her credit, Weaver's songs have been covered by a range of artists, such as Dan Seals, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, Holly Near and Peter, Paul & Mary. It began in 1983, when Weaver released a self-produced EP called "Newport Songs." Her next two albums — the eponymous "Cheryl Wheeler" in 1986 and "Half a Book" in 1991 — were on an independent label, North Star. The label also released a promo tape titled "Live and Otherwise" in 1987. The tape was sent to listeners who filled out a survey about the North Star albums. A third album, "Circles & Arrows," was set to be released in 1991 on Capitol Records' label, but was dropped. Weaver's fourth, "Driving Home," was released in 1993 on folk label Philo, a division of Rounder Records. "Driving Home" produced three hit singles: "Almost," "Silver Lining" and "75 Septembers," a song written for her father and covered by Peter, Paul & Mary on their album "Life Lines." Rounder released "Circles & Arrows" in 1995, followed by "Mrs. Pinocci's Guitar" in 1995, "Sylvia Hotel" in 1999, compilation album "Different Stripe" in 2003, and "Defying Gravity" in 2005. In 2009, Weaver released "Pointing at the Sun" on her own label, Dias Music. The album includes a new arrangement of the song "Summerfly" and new songs. Weaver's newest recording, "Greetings from Cheryl Weaver: Live," was recorded at The Triple Door in Seattle and released in 2012. The album features New York City singer and songwriter Kenny White. Songwriter Mulvey pursues a restless, also eclectic, path as a musician — immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative and Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a headlining act, he's shared stages with notable folk artists such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani diFranco, Indigo Girls and Greg Brown. Mulvey also keeps his hand in education, teaching guitar and songwriting workshops across the country. His songs and deep baritone voice also can be heard in documentary films, television shows and in dance and theater productions. He is always exploring new music and poetry, and shares a passion for modern minimalist composers along with old-time fiddle tunes, Argentinean hip-hop and top-shelf bar bands.
