PREP SOFTBALL Healthy Honkers down Pirates LAKEVIEW -- The last time the Lakeview High softball team played Phoenix, shortstop Brandi Winters and pitcher Katie Ruda were sidelined with injuries and four other players were missing for various other reasons. Not surprisingly, Phoenix romped to 11-2 and 16-3 victories. The Honkers turned the tables on Tuesday. Ruda pitched a six-hitter and Winters knocked in a run and played flawless defense as Lakeview rolled to a 3-1 Skyline Conference victory. The win elevated the Honkers to third place in the Skyline Conference with an 11-7 record. "We had a lot more confidence than last time we played them," Lakeview coach Rick Gage said. "The last time we saw them we had to pull four kids from the JVs and they weren't ready." Winters' RBI groundout knocked in Rachel Manibusan to give Lakeview a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Honkers, who boosted their overall record to 12-9, added two more runs in the third when Andrea Gillogley and Manibusen singled and later scored on a two-base error. Phoenix finally got on the board in the seventh when Chelsia Clark singled, advanced to second on a bunt by losing pitcher Kristi Davis and scored on Michelle McEvoy's single. But that was the only offense the Pirates could muster off Ruda. "We start two freshmen and four sophomores, so I'm sure we're one of the younger teams in the league," Gage said. "I'm really proud of the way these girls have come on. Phoenix .....................000 000 1 -- 1 6 3 Lakeview ...................102 000 x -- 3 4 1 Davis and Nikodym; Ruda and Gillogley.
