Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 8, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 8, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 8, 1915 BISHOP IGNORES PROTEST BY CHURCH LOSS OF PREACHER Protest by members of the First Methodist Church against the transfer of the Rev. J.K. Hawkins, who has had charge of the church for the past year, has been unavailing as Bishop Cooke has refused to reverse his order of transfer. Rev. Mr. Hawkins left Friday evening for Oregon City, where he will preach the coming year, and the Rev. J.C. Rollins, who is transferred from Corvallis, will arrive Saturday to take charge of the Medford church. Sincere regret is voiced, not only by members of the church, but by the entire community over Mr. Hawkins' departure. The church has grown remarkably during his incumbency and he was popular throughout the city. It was felt that the wishes of the congregation should have been heeded and their petition granted. The Rev. Mr. Rollins has for six years been stationed at Corvallis, one of the most prosperous and largest churches in the state, and has a statewide reputation both as a church organizer and as a preacher of ability. COUNTY COURT HEARS APPEALS FOR CASH The County Court finished the work of its regular monthly session Friday and adjourned to meet later in the month. A delegation of residents east of Bear Creek and north of Medford petitioned for the creation of a new school district, to consist of portions of the Central Point, Merriman and Red Top districts. Another delegation of Agate citizens appeared on behalf of improvement of the road running from the Central Point bridge north to Rogue River. Thursday, representatives of the newly formed Central Point Taxpayers league requested the building of a new bridge over Bear Creek to Central Point, to cost $12,000.
