How many bowl games are there? How are the teams chosen? — Dee W., Phoenix Well, Dee, sit down and take a deep breath. There are 28 bowl games scheduled to light up your television screen this holiday season, beginning with the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 17. The Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar bowls make up the Bowl Championship Series, which this year will pit No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the Fiesta for the national title. As I’m sure you’ve heard, the BCS ranks teams according to a complex formula that apparently dislikes Ducks. Champions of the six major conferences — Pac-10, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big East — join two at-large teams in the BCS games. As for the other 24 bowls, they have contracts with particular conferences. For instance, the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 in San Diego pits the Pac-10’s No. 2 team against the Big 12’s No. 3. If there are ties in league standings, bowl representatives are permitted to pick whichever deadlocked team it wants. If a bowl’s contract calls for, say, the sixth-place team from the Mountain West and that squad does not have the seven wins required for postseason eligibility, the bowl is allowed to choose from an eligible at-large team. Got that, Dee? To satisfy that itch on your head, go to a Web site like ESPN.com for a complete listing of bowl matchups, both already set and expertly projected. Once the assignments are all finalized, you’ll be able to find them in your friendly Mail Tribune Sports section. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
