A diversion from the company's usual endeavors, this production will prominently feature a large cast and lush, creative lighting and sound to provide atmosphere for an elaborate set design, says director Doug Warner. "We've actually drawn elements from the book and the movie and added them to the play to give the production more weight," Warner says. "We selected the play for our 2014-2015 season because it's the classic American story of an anti-hero versus the establishment. Often the very forces and institutions that keep us safe also keep us prisoner and strip away our fundamental right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "We added as much comedy as we could to temper the dramatic ebb and flow of the script," Warner adds. Next Stage Rep — Craterian Performances' professional acting company — will present "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, May 15-16 and May 22-23, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online at craterian.org, at the box office, 16 S. Bartlett St., or by calling 541-779-3000. The story is based on Kesey's experience as a paid experimental subject in a government study conducted by Stanford scientists at Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital in Northern California. He and other students were observed under the influence of various psychotropic drugs. Later, Kesey became an attendant in the hospital's psychiatric ward. In 1975, his novel was adapted for a film directed by Milos Forman, starring Jack Nicholson as the wildly unpredictable and charismatic Randle McMurphy. The movie earned five Academy Awards. Set in the ward of an Oregon state hospital and told from the perspective of Chief Bromden, Kesey's story focuses on questions of individuality and conformity. Chief Bromden — played by Patrick St. John in the Next Stage production — has been a patient at the psychiatric ward for 10 years. His conception is dominated by fear of what he calls the "Combine," a huge conglomeration that controls society and forces conformity. When McMurphy arrives as a transfer from the Pendleton Work Farm, Bromden senses that something is different about him. As McMurphy (Roy Rains) swaggers into the ward, he unwittingly comes under the tyrannical rule of Nurse Ratched (Presila Quinby). Determined to usurp her authority, he recruits fellow patients in an escalating battle of wills. "Kesey was a brilliant writer and managed to develop cross currents of opposing forces that provide tension in 'Cuckoo's Nest,' " Warner says. "Chief Bromden, a Native American, reveals his dreams of native culture versus civilization with eerie monologues throughout the play. The militant Nurse Ratched represents a distorted view of law and order and the status quo, and, with the arrival of McMurphy, does whatever it takes to defend that position. McMurphy is an organic, in-the-moment, physical sort of guy who seems to be on a mission to save the inmates by encouraging them to stand up for themselves. "Ultimately, Randle McMurphy is in the hands of the gods and, like every classic tragedy, is hurtling towards his inevitable fate." Brad Nelson has created lighting and sound effects — along with some fog — to provide atmosphere for the play, giving the set its fluorescent-style hospital and nighttime lighting. Gobos and patterns will be used to create texture and enhance the scenes. The effects, for example, will pull the audience's focus away from the set and draw attention to Chief Bromden's monologues. Set design is by Gabriel Ash. The May 15 and May 17 performances will feature cameo appearances by David Hollingsworth and Elizabeth Bunn, respectively, who purchased opportunities for walk-ons in November at the Craterian's annual GingerBread Jubilee fundraiser.
