Sal Esquivel and two other lawmakers over statements they made about a wolf-delisting bill. In a letter dated July 1, the Ethics Commission informed Esquivel that it wouldn’t pursue an investigation of the case after a premilinary review by staff. “The matter is, therefore, dismissed and no further action will be taken,” according to the letter. Esquivel, R-Medford, said the complaint was frivolous and was an attempt to make lawmakers look like bad guys, even thought the bill received bipartisan support. “They were upset the bill was passing,” he said. Esquivel along with Reps. Brad Witt, D-Clatskanie, and Greg Barreto, R-Cove, advocated for House Bill 4040, which affirmed the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission's decision to delist the gray wolf from Oregon Endangered Species Act protection. The bill passed the House, then the Senate, and Gov. Kate Brown signed it into law. Nicholas Cady of Cascadia Wildlands filed the complaint against Esquivel and the other lawmakers alleging they violated rules that prohibit legislators from making false statements about legislation. The group says the three claimed the bill would not preclude a court challenge of the delisting decision. The state Appeals Court did cite the bill when it dismissed the group's lawsuit in April. Cady, in a press release issued earlier, stated, “The misrepresentations surrounding HB4040 allowed the bill to pass through Oregon’s Legislature, and gray wolves will ultimately pay the price.” Cady could not be reached for comment Monday Esquivel said there was nothing in the bill that prohibited anyone from filing a suit. “That’s what we said.” Reach reporter Damian Mann at 541-776-4476 or [email protected] .
