Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 17, 2005 Injured Singler could miss up to four games for South Odell, Licea also suffer knee injuries prior to Panthers’ opening practice By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Kyle Singler’s time away from the South Medford High football team is going to be longer than expected. Singler, the team’s projected starting quarterback, underwent surgery for torn cartilage on his right knee July 12. The injury, suffered during the Nike All-America Basketball Camp, originally was expected to sideline Singler for six weeks, but the 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior is now likely to be out eight to 10 weeks, Panthers head coach Bill Singler said Tuesday. The amended timetable means the younger Singler will miss a minimum of two games and possibly as many as four. South Medford opens its season Sept. 2 at home against Tigard. The Panthers then play host to West Linn on Sept. 9, followed by road games against Lake Oswego on Sept. 16 and Crater on Sept. 23. "Our hope is that we’ll get Kyle back by our first league game (Crater)," Bill Singler said. "We’re not going to rush it. We want him to be 100 percent healthy." Advertisement Kyle Singler, a junior, was a first-team all-conference tight end and safety for South Medford’s SOC championship team in 2004. He played quarterback in middle school and sparingly as a freshman. Singler is mentioned as one of the nation’s top 50 juniors to watch in Street & Smith’s college football magazine. Two other Panthers have also fallen victim to knee injuries prior to the start of daily doubles next Monday. Senior Ryan Odell, a second-team all-conference running back and inside linebacker last season, had surgery for a cartilage tear last Wednesday. He’s expected to miss one to two games. Fullback/outside linebacker Kenny Licea is believed to have a similar injury. He’s scheduled to see orthopedic surgeon Hal Townsend later this week. "We’ve got a rash of knee injuries right now, but better now than late in the year," Bill Singler said. Senior Tommy George will likely start at quarterback in Singler’s absence. George, a 6-foot, 165-pound senior, led the South JV squad to an 8-1 record last season. "He’s played two years of JV ball and knows our offensive system as well as anyone," coach Singler said of George. "He’s got a good arm. He’s capable of making plays. He just needs to find a comfort zone." Sophomore Michael Harthun, who logged time at quarterback as an eighth grader and freshman, could also take snaps in the Panthers’ nonconference games, coach Singler said.
