LOCAL CRIME Medford man arrested after allegedly fleeing, striking officer with car door By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 21, 2014 @ 9:56 am Updated Oct 21, 2014 at 8:07 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 21, 2014 @ 9:56 am Updated Oct 21, 2014 at 8:07 PM » Social News A man who fled from police during an attempted traffic stop Monday night allegedly struck and injured a police officer with his open car door as he sped off with his lights out. Medford police say an officer pulled over Terrance Chavers, 25, just before midnight near the corner of Chestnut and Eighth streets in Medford. Chavers, driving a maroon GMC Denali, was stopped for a traffic violation. Police said Chavers pulled into a nearby driveway and shut the car engine off. The officer who pulled him over took his license and registration and found Chavers had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from a May 2013 DUII charge. "Another officer got there, and they attempted to arrest (Chavers) by having him exit the vehicle," said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. Chavers resisted and struggled with police while restarting the Denali with his free arm, Budreau said. "Once he got the vehicle going, the officers were in a pretty bad position," Budreau said, noting they were somewhat trapped between the vehicle's open door and a fence. The officers tried to avoid being struck as Chavers backed up, but the open door clipped one of the officers in the leg before Chavers navigated around the police cruisers and sped off with his headlights off. Chavers eluded police through Medford and hopped onto Interstate 5 south, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, still running without lights. Pursuers lost sight of him at the Talent exit but saw him again as he came off North Phoenix Road onto Barnett Road. Chavers disappeared a second time at Barnett Road and Golf View Drive. Police later found his vehicle abandoned on La Loma Drive. Police arrested Chavers late Tuesday afternoon after detectives conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle on Homeview Drive near Orchard Home Drive and found him riding as a passenger.   Budreau said the officer's injury was not serious, with no broken bones. Chavers was charged with attempt to elude a police vehicle, reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangerment, possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin and failure to appear for DUII. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $44,000 bail. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] . Follow him at www.twitter.com/ryanpfeil .
