LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 6 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 6, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 6, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Officers risk lives Throughout the world, past, present, and in the future, there have been and will be police officers and firefighters who sacrificed or will sacrifice their lives in order to keep people safe in their homes, their schools, their workplaces, their neighborhoods, and on their streets, and keep property safe as well. These jobs demand a sacred sense of duty, personal acts of great courage and an unselfish willingness to serve their fellow man. Police officers and firefighters know full well that any moment they may be called upon to lay down their lives in order to protect and rescue total strangers, yet they are woefully underpaid, grievously under-appreciated by the public at large, and in the case of the police officer, often thoroughly hated for simply appearing in the uniform. Police officers and firefighters shoulder an awesomely stressful responsibility on their job and off, plus, their vocations are filled with tremendous personal challenges. Putting their lives on the line to protect and to serve others is a very special calling, and a true form of selflessness. May God bless them and keep them safe! Jacqueline Glynn Medford No LNG shortcuts Recently, Gov. Kate Brown came to Southern Oregon for the Jackson County Democrats Dinner on Jan. 8. Her visit meant so much to so many people. My fellow coalition members of Stand Up For Oregon were delighted by the opportunity to speak with her in person about the Jordan Cove/Pacific Connector project. The same week the Department of State Lands held a public info session. We appreciated that opportunity to voice our concerns about the removal and fill permits for the LNG pipeline. There were hundreds of people in attendance and we know DSL received thousands of comments from Oregonians statewide. This is the largest project that our state agencies have ever had to evaluate. We want Brown to know that Oregonians fully support her in fulfilling her duty, to make sure our state agencies have ample time and adequate information to evaluate the proposed LNG project thoroughly and for the greater good of Oregon. Given the risks and challenges presented by this project, there can be no shortcuts. There is too much at stake to make decisions without the crucial information necessary to fully evaluate these permits. We call on you again, Kate Brown, to Stand Up For Oregon! Mark Newberger Ashland Climate denial mistakes Climate deniers cherry pick a few years from a data set lasting over a century to try to support the lie that there has been no warming for almost two decades. They make several critical mistakes: They forget that over 90 percent of the heat energy trapped goes into our oceans, and ocean heat content has been rising consistently. They ignore the science showing that in reality there has been no significant slowing of the warming trend. And they ignore the five-year trend of 2011-2015 that is even steeper than before 1998. We must all reduce our greenhouse gas emissions if we are to reverse this trend. We can enjoy good-paying jobs in Oregon while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. Every state that has enacted a climate pollution cap program has also enjoyed economic growth and a reduction in emissions. We in Oregon can do our part also. Globally, our emissions may contribute little, but we can be part of the solution rather than continue to be part of the problem. Oregonians who want to conserve our beautiful state, nation and planet for future generations should support the Healthy Climate Bill in the Oregon Legislature. Paula Perez Costas Ashland Confused A word has been bandied about that has confused me. The word is truth. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but my understanding of the truth is that it is undeniable, unmistakable, proven by the facts. The truth is not Democratic, Republican, libertarian or socialist. However, this word appears to have been politicized by choice from a list of factors and drawing a conclusion that is then claimed to be the truth. Perhaps we allow them to get away with it because we place a political party ahead of what is right. Perhaps truth has been replaced by “the end justifies the means as long as I get what I want.” If we stood in front of our maker today and answered for our actions, perhaps we might look at our political actions a little differently. Misleading others may be legal, but it is never right! Terry M.
