South cruises past Ashland ASHLAND - Heading into a matchup with the second-ranked South Medford boys basketball team, Ashland didn't look at the game as a win-lose situation. In fact, despite coming out on the wrong end of a 78-46 score to the Panthers on Friday, coach John Skinner was pleased his team met some pregame goals. "We're totally inexperienced and young," said Skinner. "We knew coming in that they are a huge, big team with some shooters. "I said to them 'Don't worry about the score, let's just work hard,' and they did." South Medford flexed its muscles early and built a sturdy 45-25 lead at the half. The 1-2 scoring punch of post Eric Fiegi and guard Ryan Heil scored eight points apiece in the half. "They (Heil, Fiegi) didn't get to us early," said Skinner. "The big guys we have did a good job on Fiegi, but we just broke down later in the game. "We made some typical young mistakes." Fiegi finished with a game-high 22 points and Heil added 17. Bryan Clevenger found his shooting touch for the Grizzlies with 16 points. Ashland turned the ball over 16 times compared to 27 from their last outing a week ago in dropping to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in the SOC. South Medford remained unbeaten in league play at 7-0.
