Cake and refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. today in the lobby of the Ashland Civic Center, 1175 E. Main St. The last regular council meeting for DeBoer and Laws will follow at 7 p.m. in the council chambers. New council members will take office in January. Laws has served almost continuously on the council since 1975. He was defeated in a bid for mayor by Cathy Shaw in 1988, but was back on the council in 1990. DeBoer has served since 2000 and did not seek re-election in November. Advertisement The council also will consider whether to raise rates charged by the city-owned Ashland Fiber Network for cable television and Internet. The proposal would increase cable television rates by between 5 and 9 percent, making the rates comparable to those charged by Charter Communications locally. The wholesale rate for residential Internet service would increase by $3 per month and business Internet rates would increase by $3.50 per month. Those costs would likely be passed on to customers by their Internet service providers. Additionally, the council is scheduled to proclaim Jan. 8 as Christmas tree recycling day. Residents are urged to put their trees near their curbs on Jan. 7 for pick-up by Boy Scout Troop 112. Donations are accepted. The trees will be chipped and used on park trails and for mulch.
