Fillies roll to quarters of the state tournament Local roundup SALEM -- The Oregon Fillies advanced to the quarterfinals of the 18-under ASA A State Softball Tournament with two victories Friday in the 18-team event at Wallace Marine Park. The Fillies, a select group of Southern Oregon players combined with others from around the state, defeated the Vipers of Sandy, 6-3, then rallied for a 7-1 victory over the Oregon Panthers from Salem. In the second game, the Fillies trailed 1-0 entering the seventh inning but exploded for seven runs. Missy Coe completed the outburst with a long, two-run homer. Megumi Hackett had a pair of hits in each game for the Fillies, who meet the Eastern Oregon Gamblers in the quarterfinals at 9:45 a.m. today. Baseball KLAMATH FALLS SOUTH SUBURBAN NATIONALS BLUE 9, MEDFORD AMERICAN RED 8 -- Medford came up short in the District 6 10-year-old boys championship game Friday at the Medford American Little League fields. The Americans scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead, but South Suburban rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to gain the berth to the state tournament. Nick Terry and Charles Grabowski both delivered two-run triples for Medford in the sixth inning. Medford erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the third inning. The eruption was highlighted by Mitch Sumners' RBI double and a two-run triple by Terry. Medford American pitchers Terry and Michael Harthun combined for six strikeouts in the loss. Medford had defeated Klamath Falls 13-10 in an earlier round of the 10-team, double-elimination tournament. Medford American Red ..........004 004 -- 8 S. Suburban Nationals Blue ... 021 402 -- 9 DISTRICT 6 BOYS LITTLE LEAGUE -- At Ashland, Mike Barry pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Medford Americans defeated South Central from LaPine, 15-5 in four innings, in the second round of the 11-team Major Boys District Tournament at Hunter Park. Barry also had two hits and scored two runs. The Medford attack was led by Kyle Williamson, who went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Ben Running and Jared Adamson added two hits each for Medford. Ashland defeated Klamath Falls South Suburban Blue 4-2 and will face unbeaten Medford (2-0) at 6 p.m. Sunday at Hunter Park. BABE RUTH DISTRICT 4 -- At Talent, the first round of the 13-year-old and the 13-15-year-old district tournaments kicked off Friday at Hagler-James Park. In the four-team 13-year-old opening round, Medford defeated Central Point, 4-3, and Ashland downed host Phoenix-Talent, 10-1. Central Point will play Phoenix-Talent at 8 a.m. today, while Medford meets Ashland, with the winner gaining a state tournament berth. In the five-team 13-15-year-old tournament, Medford edged Ashland, 5-4, and Phoenix-Talent topped Eagle Point, 11-1.
