St. Mary's girls triumph ROGUE RIVER St. Marys capped its non-league schedule with a bang Thursday as the Crusaders rolled past Rogue River 7-0 in girls soccer action. Emily Smith continued her sophomore onslaught with four goals while Shawna Jackson added two playing up from her fullback position. "In all fairness to Rogue River they were short-handed and I dont think that (outcome) reflects the true difference between the two teams," said St. Marys coach George Tiger. Smith got the Crusaders on the board first in the 10th minute off an assist from Margo Chamberlain. Jackson added a goal off a deflection two minutes later, then Smith capped the first half scoring with two more goals. Jackson and Smith each added another goal in the second half, while Mary Eagle also broke into the scoring column for St. Marys. Annie Maurer and Sasha Drosdick shared duties in goal for St. Marys, but were rarely tested thanks to strong defensive support by Katie MacDiarmid and Jackson and constant pressure placed on Rogue River by Smith. "Shes certainly a standout forward for us," Tiger said of his sophomore scorer. "She has a combination of good ball skills and good speed and puts herself in scoring position quite a bit." St. Marys improved to 3-1-2 on the season and opens District 5 play next Thursday against North Valley. GRANTS PASS 1, PHOENIX 0 At Talent, Tasha Crook was in the right place at the right time as the Cavers eased past Phoenix in non-conference play at Hagler-James Field. Crook scored the games lone goal in the 66th minute after a direct kick by Stephanie Clubb deflected off Stacy Feetham and rolled toward Crook. With freshman goalkeeper Acacia Lacy caught off guard by the balls change in direction, Crook had plenty of time and net to work with as she pushed a shot to just inside the post. Lacy was making her debut in goal for the Pirates (2-3-1) since freshman Kat Cox was injured against Cottage Grove on Wednesday. Cox played sparingly in the field against Grants Pass. Phoenix outshot the Cavers 22-19, with Lacy making eight saves and GP goalie Alicia Pilcher coming up with seven. HIDDEN VALLEY 5, JUNCTION CITY 2 At Murphy, Hidden Valley didnt miss too many opportunities, scoring five goals on 18 shots in the non-conference matchup. Freshman Nina Jaramillo scored two goals, including one assisted by her sister, senior Say Jaramillo. Say Jaramillo also added a goal. Boys SOUTH UMPQUA 2, ST. MARYS 1 St. Marys started off strong, but lost its focus and a tight non-conference match. Sean Snider gave St. Marys a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 20th minute. The Crusaders saw that lead evaporate as South Umpqua scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner at the 45th minute of the second half. The Crusaders (3-1) begin league play Saturday at Bonanza.
