She was born October 31, 1921 in Ottawa, Kans. At the age of 15, the family moved to California. She graduated from Barstow High School in 1940. Shortly thereafter, she met her future husband, Fred Owen. They married in 1941, and soon afterward, Fred joined the United States Army, serving at various bases around the country. During this time, Winona gave birth to their daughter, Sharon in 1942 and their son, Tommy, in 1944. In 1951, Fred Jr. was born, followed by Kelly in 1955. While in southern California, Winona worked for many years in the family construction and concrete businesses until 1961, when the family moved to the Rogue Valley in Oregon. Once again, a family business was developed around construction projects and most important, a major concrete business, Medford Ready Mix. Doing her part, Winona worked for many years to help her husband with the progress and success of the business. Winona loved working in her gardens, bringing many new plants and flowers to life each year. Craft projects were her “indoor hobbies.” She would spend countless hours designing and making beveled and stained-glass windows, to be displayed in her home and to be given to family and friends. She enjoyed making people happy with her gifts. Winona is survived by three children, Sharon Schnakenberg, Fred Owen Jr., and Kelly Owen; her sister, Janice Bingham of Apple Valley, Calif.; her grandchildren, Brett Gilmour, Todd Schnakenberg, Susan Korak, Robin Schnakenberg, David Schnakenberg, Craig Owen, Troy Owen, and Christina Owen; her great-grandchildren, Lauren Duncan, Kristen Schnakenberg, Brooke and Lauren Owen, Gage and Lilly Owen, Casey Gilmour, Owen and Olivia Schnakenberg, Robert Coy Korak, and Tommy and Sammy Owen; and her great-great-grandchildren, Connor, Cayden, and Kinsley Duncan. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred; her son, Tommy; and her grandson, Jasin Owen. It is lovingly noted that Winona enjoyed fifty years of very close friendship with Ruth Pickell of Medford, Ore. These two ladies rarely ever missed a Wednesday lunch-date. Winona was also fortunate to have a close relationship with her nephew, Peter Jacob. Peter would visit with Winona on Tuesdays, and spend many hours playing Dominos with her; they enjoyed this special time together. The family also wishes to acknowledge and extend their thanks to Winona's caregivers, Debra and Tanya. A viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Conger Morris, 767 Riverside Dr., Medford, Ore. A remembrance and celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 675 Black Oak Dr., Medford, Ore. Winona’s nephew, the Rev. Dennie Clementson will officiate. In lieu of contributions, the family asks that friends and family members plant flowers or trees, in honor of Winona. The family feels this is a fitting memorial to her life and memory.
