The Cavers (10-6, 4-4 SOC), who’ve been shut out three times in league play, exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to beat South Medford 7-0 and force a split of the twin bill. The Panthers took the opener, 5-1. Allie Farmer spanked an RBI triple in the sixth frame and Justine Cerda followed later with a two-run double to help the Cavers pull away. "We’ve played pretty good defense this season," said GP coach Clay Rounsaville, "and I knew we were about to start hitting. I think we finally did what we knew we were capable of doing all along. "We knew we needed to win that second game and, by golly, we went out and did it." Advertisement The Cavers took advantage of four South errors to score two runs in the fifth without a hit and break up a scoreless tie. "It was kind of a fluky inning," said Rounsaville. "It went downhill (for South) pretty fast. I guess (the inning) kind of opened the flood gates." Pitcher Ashley Franko limited South Medford (11-4, 6-2 SOC) to four hits to record the win. Jonni Byrne went 3-for-3 to lead the Panthers, and pitcher Jill Jeter struck out eight in defeat. In the opener, Jen Mendenhall and Jeter combined on a three-hitter. Byrne, who had two hits and three RBIs, doubled home two runs during a three-run fifth that helped South pull away. Alex Jordahl and Mendenhall each went 2-for-4 to lead South’s 10-hit attack. Farmer was 2-for-3 to pace Grants Pass. NORTH MEDFORD 3-10, ASHLAND 0-0 — Kendra Strahm pitched a one-hitter in the first game and hit a grand slam in the second to power North Medford (8-6, 4-4 SOC) at Fagone Field. In the opener, Strahm struck out six and hit two batters. The lone hit was a single by Amanda Cardoza, who singled to lead off the fifth inning. The Black Tornado scored in the first when Katie Gould singled, took second on a passed ball, stole third and came in on a Mallorie Hoover single. North, which got two hits each from Gould and Hoover, tallied twice more in the fourth. In Game 2, the Tornado went scoreless until a seven-run fourth inning. The big blow was Strahm’s grand slam, a line shot down the left-field line that scored Hoover, Rachelle Willden and Jessica Sandoval. Strahm added an RBI double in the fifth, and Gould ended the contest on the 10-run mercy rule moments later with a two-run single to score Strahm and Emily Morrill, who was hit by a pitch. Hoover allowed seven hits, struck out two and didn’t walk anyone in the pitching win. CRATER 7-10, KLAMATH UNION 0-0 — At Central Point, Crater’s Janelle Cristofaro pitched a no-hitter in the opener, and Ashleigh Cuddie followed with in the nightcap with her fourth win against no losses. Cristofaro (10-3) posted eight strikeouts and five walks. In the second game, Cuddie had nine strikeouts and no walks in a one-hit shutout. Becca Shelamer went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game for the Comets (14-3, 6-2 SOC). ROSEBURG 2-3, EAGLE POINT 0-2 — At Eagle Point, SOC-leading Roseburg scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning of Game 2 to sweep the doubleheader. Brittney Griggs drove in both Eagle Point runs in the third inning to stake an early lead in the nightcap. In the opener, pitcher Jayde Curry blanked Eagle Point (10-6, 2-6 SOC) and Ali Paz provided some offense with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the fifth. Terrah Whipple was 3-for-3 and Tenielle Anderson 2-for-3, while pitcher Kelsey Heider struck out nine to lead the Eagles in Game 1. For Roseburg (13-3, 8-0), Brittany Gates went 2-for-3 in the opener and Kim Posey provided a pair of hits in Game 2. Charlie Reina led Crater offensively with three hits including a home run, to help put the game out of reach. Also for the Comets, Jesse Bailey had three hits, two of them doubles, and Jeff Weiss chipped in with a double. In the opener, Klamath Union pitcher Daniel Bennett struck out seven and had one walk, while allowing four hits for the Pelicans (3-16, 2-11 SOC). Bailey and Weiss both doubled in Game 1, with Weiss also adding two hits for Crater (5-7 SOC).
