COLLEGE FOOTBALL Petersen's Dawgs return to Autzen By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Oct. 15, 2014 @ 5:32 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Oct. 15, 2014 @ 5:32 pm » Social News EUGENE — Kenny Wheaton delivered “The Pick” for Oregon. Now Washington hopes Chris Petersen was the right pick to deliver another dramatic turnaround in the series with the Ducks and get the Huskies back into the national spotlight. Oregon is 15-4 against Washington dating back to the 31-20 victory in 1994, including the current 10-game winning streak spanning Keith Gilbertson, Tyrone Willingham and Steve Sarkisian. Petersen compiled a 92-12 (.885) record in eight seasons at Boise State — including a 2-0 record against the Ducks — before replacing Sarkisian (now at USC) last winter. Entering Saturday’s game at Autzen Stadium (5 p.m., Fox Sports 1), the Huskies have matched the Ducks with a 5-1 overall record. Petersen was an Oregon assistant under Mike Bellotti from 1995-2000. His Broncos beat Bellotti’s Ducks 32-27 at Autzen Stadium in 2008 and spoiled Chip Kelly’s debut 19-8 in Boise in 2009. “I was on the other side when I coached at Oregon. I heard the exact other thing because UW was rolling good and everyone at Oregon was waiting to beat them. The tide has changed,” said Petersen, who left Bellotti’s staff to become Boise State’s offensive coordinator. “I know how important it is for us. I’m from the west, I get that. But as a coach, I am not going to prepare any harder. I try to do my best every week to get guys ready to play and meet the standards Oregon is about. “It’s an elite program, one of the most elite in the country, and we have to play our best to compete with them.” Petersen and Oregon counterpart Mark Helfrich are close friends, although the two have not spoken since the Pac-12 media day event in July. “During the season it’s virtually impossible. I barely talk to my wife enough. I probably need to do that more,” Helfrich quipped. “He’s a great man, a great husband, a great father, a great coach. But it’s game week, and they’re next.” Petersen’s creative and high-scoring offenses at Boise State stole the show and the memorable Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. This year Washington is winning with a physical and opportunistic defense. Linebacker Shaq Thompson has returned three fumbles for touchdowns, one interception for a touchdown and also run for a touchdown on offense. “I think he just has that ‘it’ factor. Certain players you are around, when they are really, really good they have the instinct to be around a play,” Petersen said. “If there’s a play to be made, they make it, and that’s how Shaq has been.” Oregon all-American center Hroniss Grasu will have his hands full with 6-2, 339-pound nose tackle Danny Shelton. Defensive end Hau’oli Kikaha leads the Pac-12 with 13 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Washington, which has forced 12 fumbles and only turned the ball over once on offense, leads the nation in turnover margin (+2.33). “I think he inherited a good football team, a lot of the talent. Right away I can see some of the things I always admired about Boise, especially the toughness and intelligence factor,” Oregon secondary coach John Neal said of Petersen. “They were always really smart. They know what their quarterback can and can’t do, they want to run the football, they keep the turnovers down to a minimum, they understand possessions and they understand how to complement it with a good defense. It’s really a great formula.” Washington ranks eighth in the Pac-12 in scoring offense (34.8 ppg) and second in scoring defense (21.3 ppg). Both statistics are somewhat skewed by the Huskies’ 59-52 victory over Eastern Washington. Starting quarterback Cyler Miles, who was suspended for the opener at Hawaii, is only averaging 179.2 passing yards per game with nine touchdowns and no interceptions. Washington and Oregon are the only two teams in the nation that have yet to throw an interception this year. Last week Miles threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns during an impressive 31-7 victory at California. The Huskies also got 111 rushing yards from Lavon Coleman and Dwayne Washington. Thompson turned the tide in the game with a 100-yard fumble return for a touchdown to knock the surprising Bears from their perch atop the North Division standings. “We don’t have many guys like Shaq Thompson on our scout team, or any of their front guys,” Helfrich said of Washington’s defense, which has 24 sacks (third in the nation). “They are incredibly talented and deep. I think five of their front seven are seniors, so they’re really good. That’s a huge challenge.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Oct. 15, 2014 @ 5:32 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Reaction for Brady, Gronk Oct. 17, 2014 at 12:49 am Fantasy Reaction for Pats WRs Oct. 16, 2014 at 11:34 pm Fantasy Reaction for Jets Stars Oct. 16, 2014 at 11:13 pm Instant Fantasy Reaction for Jets RB Oct. 16, 2014 at 10:00 pm Instant Fantasy Reaction for Pats RBs Oct. 16, 2014 at 9:37 pm McKinnon a Shaky Week 7 Fantasy Option Oct. 16, 2014 at 6:04 pm calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
